Lagos State has set an ambitious economic target of reaching a $1 trillion economy by 2052, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu outlined the strategy during the Lagos Executive Business Breakfast Meeting, hosted by the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce in Lekki. The plan hinges on the Lagos State Development Plan 2052, a 33-year blueprint with 447 initiatives across 21 sectors, including infrastructure, technology, and human capital development.

The governor emphasized four core pillars: a thriving economy, a human-centred city, modern infrastructure, and effective governance. He noted that improvements in port efficiency, digital connectivity, and regulatory reforms have already boosted manufacturing and job creation. Since taking office in 2019, his administration has expanded public services in transportation, healthcare, and education while increasing the state budget from ₦700 billion in 2019 to ₦4.2 trillion in 2026.

Key projects driving growth include the Blue and Red rail lines, the Lekki Deep Sea Port, and expansions in Lagos’ technology and creative sectors. The state is also prioritizing small and medium-sized enterprises through financing and grants, alongside efforts to develop a skilled workforce for emerging industries. Sanwo-Olu’s administration has focused on business-friendly policies, citing these as essential to unlocking Lagos’ economic potential.

The Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce reinforced the need for public-private partnerships to sustain growth. Its president, Abimbola Olashore, called for deeper collaboration between government, businesses, and investors to improve the business environment. The chamber’s focus remains on strengthening trade ties between Nigeria and the UK, a critical market for Lagos’ expansion.
