Swiss franc gains ground against dollar

The dollar-Swiss franc exchange rate closed the week at 0.8170 francs, marking a rally driven by three converging forces: escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a widening gap between U.S. and Swiss monetary policy, and Swiss bond yields that failed to support the franc as they might have in other circumstances.

Geopolitical tensions fuel demand for the dollar

The trigger was the Middle East. Rising tensions between the United States and Iran pushed investors toward the dollar as a safe-haven asset. The Swiss franc, which typically competes with the dollar in such environments, saw only limited demand. That’s because the Swiss National Bank (SNB) has been actively working to weaken the franc, keeping interest rates near historic lows and intervening in currency markets to sell francs when the currency threatens to strengthen too much.

The SNB’s goal is straightforward: protect Swiss exporters and prevent deflation. This policy puts a ceiling on the franc’s gains, even during periods of global risk aversion.

Federal Reserve policy widens the interest rate gap

On the other side of the equation, the Federal Reserve is in a different phase of its monetary cycle. U.S. interest rates remain significantly higher than Switzerland’s, and the yield differential continues to favor dollar-denominated assets. Investors holding long positions on the dollar against the franc have earned the carry—the implicit return from the interest rate spread—without needing a strong directional move in the exchange rate.

This dynamic tends to reinforce itself. The higher yield attracts capital to the dollar, pushing it higher. The SNB then steps in to limit the franc’s strength, which in turn keeps the cycle going.

Technical outlook points to further gains

The pair’s weekly close above 0.8150 francs is a technical signal. The next target is 0.8200 francs, a psychologically significant level that also aligns with historical resistance. Elliott Wave analysis indicates potential for the rally to extend toward 0.8250-0.8400 francs if the current upward wave continues.

On the downside, the critical support level to watch is 0.8060 francs.
