President Donald Trump predicted the war with Iran would end after the November US mid-term elections, while threatening to strike a key Iranian nuclear site. His comments came as both sides escalated attacks on shipping, disrupting global oil supplies. The latest wave of attacks marked the most intense since the war began six months ago, further straining an already volatile region.
Trump accused Tehran of trying to influence the elections, which will determine control of Congress. “They’re desperate to try and affect the election,” he told reporters, emphasizing that Iran’s actions were aimed at undermining Republican prospects in the upcoming vote.
Escalating Tensions, Rising Oil Prices
Iran attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz after the US sank five Iranian tankers, the latest in a series of retaliatory strikes. These attacks have severely impacted global oil markets, with Brent crude prices remaining above $100 a barrel. The disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea have forced oil producers to seek alternative, longer routes, increasing transportation costs and contributing to higher fuel prices worldwide.
The conflict has driven Trump’s popularity to record lows, with fuel prices soaring across the United States. Threats Against Pickaxe Mountain
Trump threatened to strike Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified site near the Natanz uranium enrichment facility. “We will have to hit them very hard,” he warned at the Republican convention, showing the site’s strategic importance. Pickaxe Mountain hosts two deeply buried tunnel complexes, making it a critical target in efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The US and Israel initially struck Iran in February over concerns about its nuclear program, which Iran claims is for peaceful purposes. Despite these claims, international skepticism remains high, fueling ongoing tensions.

The Strait of Hormuz, once a major oil supply route, has seen a sharp drop in traffic. Only seven vessels transited on Wednesday, half the recent average, according to ship-tracking data. Fighting has also intensified between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, threatening global energy supplies. Recent Houthi attacks wounded at least 73 people in southern Saudi cities, including Khamis Mushait, a major target. The attacks targeted both civilian areas and critical infrastructure, highlighting the Houthis’ expanding capabilities and their willingness to escalate the conflict.
The militant group claimed responsibility for attacks on an air base and oil infrastructure in the region, one of the largest since the US-Israeli war on Iran began in February. Saudi authorities issued multiple emergency alerts in Khamis Mushait before declaring an all-clear on Thursday. These alerts showed the ongoing threat to regional stability and the potential for further escalation.
