JPMorgan Gets Initial Nod for Nigeria Merchant Bank Setup - merchant bank
The proposed institution, JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited, marks a significant development for Nigeria’s financial services industry.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has granted JPMorgan approval-in-principle to establish a merchant bank in the country. This decision indicates growing international confidence in Nigeria’s financial sector reforms and its potential for deeper capital market integration.

The proposed institution, JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited, marks a significant development for Nigeria’s financial services industry. It reflects increasing international interest in the country’s financial markets and long-term economic prospects.

Michael Akuka, director of the Corporate Communications and Investor Relations Department at the CBN, announced the approval. He stated that this move is part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening financial stability, improving market confidence, and deepening Nigeria’s integration with global capital markets.

This approval follows the successful implementation of the banking sector recapitalization exercise, which has enhanced the resilience and capacity of the Nigerian banking system.

Led by Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the CBN, these reforms focus on financial stability, market deepening, and rebuilding international confidence in Nigeria’s financial system.

Cardoso emphasized, “Our objective is to build a financial system that is stable, competitive, and internationally connected, one that commands confidence and can effectively support investment and economic growth.”

He further stated, “We are encouraged by the growing interest of international financial institutions in Nigeria. Our focus remains on sustaining the reforms, strengthening the credibility of our markets, and creating an environment where both domestic and international institutions can participate and thrive.”

For Nigerians, this development could mean increased access to global financial services and investment opportunities. It may also lead to more competitive banking options and potentially lower costs for financial transactions, as international institutions bring their expertise and resources to the local market.

However, the CBN clarified that the approval-in-principle is only the initial stage of the regulatory approval process and does not constitute a final banking license. JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited must fulfill all regulatory requirements before receiving authorization to commence operations.

The CBN has approved the appointment of Adedapo Adedayo Olagunju as managing director of the proposed bank, along with several non-executive and independent non-executive directors.

Operations will only begin after the CBN issues a final license. The bank remains committed to maintaining a robust, competitive, and globally connected financial system that supports sustainable economic growth and expands Nigeria’s participation in international financial markets.
